Boy Meets Boy

Boy Meets Boy - David Levithan I have no idea why I waited so long to read David Levithan, but I was mistaken. You can all feel free to chastise me and yell at me to read the rest of his books (trust me, I want to). I decided to pick up Boy Meets Boy because Kristi of The Story Siren was having LGBT lit days. I’ve read few LGBT books and nothing Levithan, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. I am eager to read the rest of his books. What I loved most about this book was the quirkiness of it all. I don’t know of any communities quite as quirky as the one which Levithan has created, which felt both creative and original. As I was reading, I got the feeling that this was a town that was tolerant of people regardless of gender and or sexuality. I thought this was awesome, because I think many communities could benefit from being more like the one in this book. This book is slim volume, and while there’s a lot of optimism, there’s also struggle. Levithan writes about love, both platonic and romantic, and manages to successfully depict how passion or spite can cause us to act in a way we normally wouldn’t otherwise, or how easy it is to feel entirely alone. The characters are not perfect, and while optimistic, I think Levithan leaves his ending open for interpretation. All of these elements felt so honest to me, which I absolutely loved.Boy Meets Boy is not only a fantastic book, but an excellent introduction to LGBT YA lit (even acronyms for you?). It was impossible for me not to fall in love with the quirkiness of this book. If you have yet to read any of David Levithan’s work, I highly suggest remedying your situation as soon as possible. I can’t wait to check out his other novels!
